About Salaty Whisk

Last reviewed: 26 April 2026 · By team editor

Salaty Whisk is a daily reference for Islamic prayer times for Muslims living in or travelling to Portugal. The site lists times for sixty cities — Lisboa, Porto, Coimbra, Funchal, Ponta Delgada, and the major Muslim community hubs of the mainland, Madeira, and the Azores — refreshed every day from the Aladhan calculation engine, an open-source service run by IslamicNetwork.

The scope covers the five daily prayers (Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha), the hijri calendar, weekly per-city schedules, an iftar countdown for Ramadan, iCal exports by city, and a set of guides and articles on Muslim life in Portugal — from the Andalusi heritage of Mértola and Silves to the contemporary Ramadan traditions of the Mouraria, Martim Moniz, and the Algarve.

Our method

The site uses the Muslim World League (MWL) standard, which is what the Comunidade Islâmica de Lisboa (CIL) uses. MWL puts Fajr at 18° below the horizon and Isha at 17° — the most widely audited prayer-time calculation in use today. It matches what mosques use in Morocco, Senegal, Algeria, and across international Muslim communities with roots similar to Portugal's Muslim diaspora. For a full breakdown of the angles and how they compare with other methods (Egyptian, Umm al-Qura, ISNA, Karachi), see the methods page. Calculations come from the Aladhan API, an open-source service maintained by IslamicNetwork.

Privacy

The site is free. No sign-up, no tracking. No personal data collection, no third-party analytics or marketing cookies, no accounts. Pages load fast on any device and the full HTML is server-rendered — no JavaScript hydration, no third-party dependencies for the main content. See the privacy policy for the full details.

Editor

The site is edited by team editor, a Portuguese-resident Muslim with a background in software engineering and a long-running interest in how Islamic prayer-time calculations are implemented in practice. The editorial work covers fact-checking against the Comunidade Islâmica de Lisboa register, cross-validating Aladhan API output for high-latitude cities, writing the city-page introductions, and replying to corrections. Reach the editor at hello@thewhiskai.com.

Editorial process

City pages are reviewed quarterly. Mosque addresses are checked against public sources — official mosque websites, the Comunidade Islâmica de Lisboa register, and Google Maps at the time of publication. Calculation data comes only from the Aladhan API. When we find an error in a prayer time or a mosque listing, we fix it as soon as possible and log the change on the relevant page.

The editor doesn't publish sponsored content and doesn't accept payment to feature mosques or community centres — all mosque listings are editorial and free. The only monetisation is Google AdSense, clearly labelled as "Sponsored". For more detail see the editorial policy and the sources page.

Data validation

The Aladhan calculation engine uses the standard astronomical formulas defined by the Muslim World League for Fajr (sun at 18° below the horizon) and Isha (sun at 17°). We cross-check the API returns against tables published independently by the European Council for Fatwa and Research for mid-latitudes. When we spot systemic errors, we report them to IslamicNetwork (the API operator). The legal framework for religious practice in Portugal is set by Law 16/2001 (Religious Freedom Act). Local differences between our calculated adhan and your mosque's iqamah are expected — they're not errors but the local congregation's iqamah policy.

Limits

Published times are astronomical calculations, not observations. They come from the position of the sun and the twilight angles defined by the Muslim World League method. Local mosques publish iqamah times that may intentionally differ from the calculated adhan to give the congregation time to gather. For congregational prayer, follow your local mosque's iqamah schedule.
