How we calculate prayer times across Portugal.

The site lists daily prayer times for sixty Portuguese cities — every district capital, the islands of Madeira and the Azores, and the major Muslim community hubs around the Algarve, Greater Lisboa, and Porto. The calculation uses the Muslim World League (MWL) method, the same one the Comunidade Islâmica de Lisboa (CIL) uses. MWL puts Fajr at 18° below the horizon and Isha at 17°, the most widely audited prayer-time calculation in use today.

All times come from the open-source Aladhan API and refresh every 24 hours. There's no sign-up, no third-party analytics, no personal data storage. Times are calculated, not observed — your local mosque may publish iqamah times that differ from the calculated adhan. For congregational prayer, follow your mosque's schedule.

Hijri dates come from the same Aladhan calendar engine and update on their own. The site is bilingual — switch between English and Portuguese with the EN/PT toggle in the header.

FAQ

Frequently asked.

The things people ask most about Salaty Whisk.

How accurate are the prayer times on Salaty Whisk?

Prayer times here come from the open-source Aladhan API, calculated with the Muslim World League method (Method 3 in the Aladhan engine). MWL puts Fajr at the moment the sun reaches 18° below the horizon during morning twilight and Isha at 17° below the horizon at dusk. The Comunidade Islâmica de Lisboa (CIL) uses MWL, and most Portuguese mosques do too. The site pulls fresh values from Aladhan every day and caches them for 24 hours per city. The angles are mathematically conservative — they won't produce a time so tight that you miss the prayer window. For congregational prayer, follow your local mosque's iqamah schedule, which delays prayer past the calculated adhan to give worshippers time to gather. Accuracy is sub-minute for the city centre and within seconds for the immediate metropolitan area.

Why don't the times match my mosque's schedule?

Mosques publish iqamah times — the moment the congregation actually gathers and the imam starts prayer. They're deliberately delayed past the calculated adhan to give worshippers time to arrive and complete ablution (wudu). The times here are calculated adhan times: the precise astronomical moment when each prayer's window opens. A typical Portuguese mosque delays Fajr iqamah by 25 to 30 minutes after the calculated adhan, Dhuhr/Asr/Isha by 10 to 20 minutes, and Maghrib by only 5 to 10 minutes (because the Maghrib window is narrow). Two mosques in the same city can differ by ten or fifteen minutes for the same prayer based on local convention. Some mosques also use a non-MWL method, like Egyptian or Karachi. For congregational prayer, follow your mosque's iqamah; for private prayer at home or while travelling, the calculated times here are reliable.

Is Salaty Whisk free to use, and what data does it collect?

Yes, the site is free. No sign-up, no account, no email, no third-party analytics, no tracking cookies. Pages load fast on any device, and the full HTML is server-rendered — no JavaScript hydration is needed for the main content. We don't collect personally identifiable information of any kind, don't sell or share data with third parties, and don't run Facebook Pixel, Google Analytics, or anything similar. Google AdSense supports the site — when ads are enabled, they show up with a clear 'Sponsored' label, and only AdSense's own contextual cookies apply. Even with AdSense on, your prayer time consultation stays private. Server logs keep anonymous request data (IP address, user agent, requested page) for 30 days, used only for diagnostics and abuse prevention. The full privacy policy is in the footer.

Which Portuguese cities does Salaty Whisk cover, and how do I find mine?

The site covers sixty Portuguese cities — every district capital from the Minho to the Algarve, the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores, and the major Muslim community hubs around Greater Lisboa and Porto. That includes Lisboa, Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia, Amadora, Braga, Almada, Coimbra, Setúbal, Sintra, Cascais, Loures, Évora, Faro, Aveiro, Viseu, Leiria, Guimarães, Funchal, Ponta Delgada, and many more. Each city has its own page with today's Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha times, a 7-day calendar, an iCal export for your calendar app, latitude-aware Ramadan and daylight notes, and notable mosques where applicable. The 60-city set is fixed for now, but if you want a city added, send the request through the contact page. To find your city, use the search at the top of the homepage or browse the cities index — cities are grouped by region (Norte, Centro, Lisbon Metropolitan Area, Alentejo, Algarve, Madeira, and Azores).
